About Aztec Foundation
The Aztec Foundation is a Swiss foundation dedicated to advancing open-source, programmable privacy for the decentralized web. We support the development of the Aztec Network - the first decentralized, privacy-preserving Layer 2 on Ethereum - and champion the research, tooling, and ecosystem that put privacy technology into the hands of builders worldwide.
The Foundation contributes across protocol operations, technology, and commercial functions; funds cryptography research and public-goods projects; and administers grants to teams building privacy-first applications. Our mission is to solve one of the biggest barriers to mainstream blockchain adoption - privacy - while strengthening user freedom.
The Role
We are looking for a Fractional Director of Finance to lead the Foundation’s finance function end to end. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will own financial strategy, planning, controls, treasury, and reporting for a globally distributed nonprofit operating at the intersection of open-source software, cryptography research, and digital assets.
This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable navigating the accounting and regulatory complexity of crypto-native operations, and partnering with leadership to steward the Foundation’s resources responsibly.
What You’ll Do
- Own the Foundation’s financial strategy, annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning, and translate mission priorities into a sustainable financial plan.
- Establish and maintain robust accounting, internal controls, and financial policies appropriate to a nonprofit handling both fiat and digital assets.
- Lead treasury management - including custody, liquidity, and risk management of crypto and fiat holdings - in line with the Foundation’s risk appetite and governance.
- Lead treasury token accounting, vesting/lockup administration and implementation and operation of token custody solutions
- Oversee month-end close, consolidated reporting, audits, and the preparation of financial statements to Swiss foundation and, where relevant, digital-asset accounting standards.
- Design and administer the financial operations behind grants and ecosystem funding, ensuring disbursements are tracked, compliant, and auditable.
- Manage tax, statutory filings, and regulatory compliance across the jurisdictions in which the Foundation operates, working with external counsel and advisors.
- Partner with the Executive Director and COO on financial modelling, scenario planning, and decisions on research funding, grants, and headcount.
- Report on financial health and controls to the board and key stakeholders with clarity and rigor.
What You Bring
- 10+ years of progressive finance experience, including senior leadership of a finance function (Head of Finance, Finance Director, Controller, or comparable).
- A professional accounting qualification (CPA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) and deep command of financial controls, reporting, and treasury.
- Experience in a blockchain, Web3, or crypto-native organisation.
- Experience with digital assets and crypto accounting, custody, and treasury practices
- A builder’s mindset: comfortable operating hands-on in a lean, fast-moving environment.
- Strong judgment on risk, compliance, and multi-jurisdictional operations, with the ability to work alongside legal and tax advisors.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to make financial matters clear to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Alignment with the Foundation’s mission and values around privacy, open source, and user freedom.
Nice to Have
- Experience standing up finance for an early-stage or newly launched entity.
- Exposure to international governance and cross-border tax structuring.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to shape the finance function of a mission-driven foundation at the frontier of privacy technology.
- A remote-first, globally distributed team of world-class cryptographers, engineers, and operators.
- Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience and location.
- Meaningful autonomy and a direct line to leadership and the board.
