Senior Linux Unix Firmware Engineer – Saia Burgess Controls (Honeywell)
Location: Givisiez or Rolle, Switzerland (Hybrid – Fixed 3 days on-site / 2 remote)
Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior Linux Unix Firmware Engineer to take ownership of firmware development and maintenance across the QronoX platform and a broad portfolio of legacy Saia Burgess Controls products. This role requires deep technical expertise in embedded systems, we’re looking for someone who we can define as “embedded full stack”: from applications and APIs (REST, RPC, etc) to electrical buses, peripherals, microcontrollers.
Our ecosystem spans different generations of complex products, going from tiny microcontrollers to full-fledged operating systems, so you should be a strong system thinker, able to map concepts easily, maintain large contexts and navigate across hardware, firmware and software with ease. We work with Linux, QNX, bare metal and homebrew solutions on the legacy lines.
As a senior in the team, you should be able to work autonomously on complex topics, easily dive deep and understand product interactions, be able to review code from your peers and contribute yourself, help others with their own understanding, and be able to cooperate on different levels with stakeholders from different domains.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance firmware for QronoX automation controllers.
- Own sustaining engineering and bug fixing activities for legacy SBC products.
- Perform deep root-cause analysis across multi-module, real-time embedded systems.
- Understand and manage interactions between firmware components, hardware modules, and system-level behavior.
- Work closely with hardware, QA, and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Maintain high standards of code quality, documentation, and testability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- Proficiency with Linux (or other Unix or at least POSIX-compliant OS) as a daily operating system
- 7+ years of experience in embedded firmware development.
- Strong proficiency in both C and C++14 for real-time embedded systems
- Experience debugging complex systems with limited external support.
- Strong self-organization and ownership mindset.
Highly welcomed:
- RTOS experience (microkernel architectures)
- Knowledge or practical experience with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, CAN, Profinet, OPC-UA, BACnet, DALI)
- Cryptography knowledge (symmetric/asymmetric keys, PKI, certificate management, security protocols)
- Work experience with firmware update process and protocols
- Work experience with networking (IPv4, IPv6, TCP and UDP, firewalling, wireshark)
Workplace Model
This position follows Honeywell’s fixed hybrid model of 3 days on-site and 2 days remote per week. Givisiez is the primary R&D center for the Saia Burgess Controls brand and hosts the embedded engineering teams, hardware labs, and core QronoX and legacy product test environments. Regular on-site presence in Givisiez enables close collaboration with the core engineering team and access to laboratory infrastructure required for deep firmware and hardware debugging. Rolle serves as a complementary Honeywell site, supporting broader collaboration while maintaining strong alignment with the Givisiez R&D organization.
